The Chinese Academic Conference on Maternal and Child Health, was held by the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, the George Institute for Global Health and the United Nations Population Fund, in Beijing, on May 18-19.  Wang Longde, President of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that maternal and child health was the premise and foundation of humanity's sustainable development, and the Chinese Government has given priority to it over the years, which has remarkably improved the health of women and children.  The Chinese Preventive Medicine Association has been active in women and children's health care, reproductive health, birth defects and vaccinations and immunity, and it has made fruitful contributions to policy formulation, academic exchange, popularization of scientific knowledge and commercialization of scientific research achievements in the field of maternal and child health, Wang added.  Zhang Li, Deputy Director of the Office of the National Working Committee on Women and Children under the State Council, urged that the quality of the new-born population should be improved and be synchronized with the nation's economic and social development.  The United Nations Population Fund spares no effort to improve the lives of women and children in China and other countries in the world. In the future, it will strengthen cooperation with China to further improve their health and well-being, according to Babatunde Ahonsi, representative of the United Nations Population Fund in China. The theme of the conference was focusing on safeguarding the health of women and children throughout their full life cycle. Song Li, Deputy Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health under the National Health Commission, delivered a keynote speech entitled Progress and Prospects of Maternal and Child Health in China, elaborating on the achievements and challenges of the maternal and child health industry over the past 70 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China.  To further discuss maternal and child related topics, the conference also invited professionals to take part in-depth exchanges in policy guarantees, operation mechanisms, maternal and child health, prevention and control of birth defects and national planning.  The conference was the first national academic event held by the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, which gathered domestic and overseas experts to share cutting-edge information and ideas. It played a positive role in promoting the academic development of maternal and child health.  More than 100 domestic and overseas experts in the fields of reproductive health, maternal and child health care, and vaccination and immunity lectured at the conference. About 1,700 representatives, from institutions of maternal and child health care, medical and physical examination institutions, community-level health care centers, disease control institutions, medical universities and scientific research institutes, also attended the conference.    (Source: China Women's News/Translated and edited by Women of China)
